Jaw pain, commonly referred to as TMD (temporomandibular dysfunction), can affect anyone and dramatically impacts quality of life. The jaw is a hinge joint that is anchored to the skull by muscles from the head and neck, and misalignments in the upper neck can alter how the jaw articulates with the skull. Signs that there may be stress in the temporomandibular joint include clicking, grinding, and pain with opening and closing the mouth.
This dysfunction will cause muscles of the head, neck, shoulders, and back to compensate as the jaw moves in this abnormal position. If left unresolved, this can result in decreased jaw function, headaches, neck pain, ear pain, difficulty sleeping, restricted airway, and digestive problems.
The NUCCA adjustment is an effective way to gently and precisely correct misalignments in the upper neck, thereby allowing the head and jaw to return to their proper orientation. This helps to reduce extraneous muscle tension and stress on the jaw. When appropriate, we work in conjunction with dentists and dental specialists to optimize your bite and jaw alignment.
